Star Sustainable Mission

As a manufacturer, we feel it is our responsibility to have a positive influence on the environment in which we live and work. Sustainability includes both the products we manufacture and the processes we use to manufacture them. Over the last few years, we have made great strides in this arena. Our focus has been in many areas, including source reduction, re-using, recycling and recovery.

Source Reduction

Star has been focusing on source reduction for over 10 years. We have developed structures that are thinner but stronger. We have won awards for unit dose packaging concepts as far back as 1997. An ongoing program includes the development and introduction of a new product line of renewable/recyclable/biodegradable/compostable film with the trade name of TerraFLEX™.

Recycling/Recovery

In the last 3 years, we have expanded our efforts and now have reduced our production and plant waste by over one half. We recycle virtually 100% of our in plant film waste, corrugated and paper products, pallets, cores and end boards. Even our solvent is recovered, using a distillation process to create an alternative fuel source. Other projects on which we have focused are our JIT programs for raw materials as well as a roll racking system to maximize internal storage capacity. This significantly reduces the total square footage required for warehousing and process storage.

Energy and Secondary Packaging

We are continuing to monitor and reduce our internal energy use by reducing our electric, gas and water usage. Our goal is to not only help our customers reduce their packaging cost and materials, but to reduce the packaging it takes to get our product to our customers.
